Featuring new Deaf helpers

26

September

Featuring some new faces on the scene.

Left: Meet Stanley Belulok. Believe me, he appears to have the strength of 10000 horses. Where on earth does he get that kind of strength. He isn’t a large framed person but am amazed at how much he can weight lift. A very humorous guy, yet with a quiet pleasant disposition. Right : That sweet and pretty lady seated and posing for the camera is Stanley’s wife, Catharine Sajon. She is soft spoken (in her sign communicaton) and is very gentle in her mannerisms and can also appear a little shy.

Left : Vivian Saw. She visited our booth many times in the past. Vivian took some time to assist Guat Lay while Lois went on a lunch break. Right : Chan Khing Hing who has started working for us. He easily breaks into laughter, and it’s very easy for anyone who talks to him, to also break into laughter.

To all our new Deaf helpers, welcome and do hope you will stay with us.

Sep 26, 2008 - Deaf Art Promotion/Expose as part of Sunway Pyramid’s Gaya Raya event

26

September

Here we bring you some pictures of our event held last weekend (Sep 19-21, 2008) at Sunway Pyramid.

Pictured above is Kong Guat Lay who we featured recently. She is seen here very engrossed in her preparations and paper craft making of lovely jewellery boxes. At the end of our weekend promotion, nearly all of those paper craft creations were sold. People stood amazed as they watched her craft these jewellery boxes.

 Â

Left : Several admirers of Phoebe’s crafted ear rings. Right : Phoebe holding up the pair of earrings that the customer in the middle purchased. Those beautifully crafted earrings by Phoebe are turning out to be a hot item.

Customers at our booths. The first day of the weekend event was rather quiet but the crowd was more visible and packed on the third day of the event.

Left : Lim Anuar doing a watercolour painting demo while a child cannot take his eyes off Lim Anuar at work. Right : Lim Anuar’s several paintings on display.

Deaf Fashion Show. From left : Phoebe Ting, Shiho, Lois and Rachel. This was a very special moment for our Deaf models, for the Mission and to the public. The point we wanted to make was that Deaf people can do anything. The models were wearing batik pareos designed by Lim Anuar. In addition, each of them exhibited the items sold at our Deaf Art Expose (Calendar, Batik Hankerchieves, Deaf Art Hari Raya Cards, Guat Lay’s paper craft, photo album).

The faces of these folks above show they were really enjoying the Deaf Fashion Show. They are part of the Deaf audience who must have felt proud to see Deaf models doing the catwalk so professionally, thanks to Dino, the models’ coach.

Dino coordinated the catwalk, and even looked into the nitty gritties of how the models were dressed for the catwalk. He was also the Deaf emcee for the show, as well as for the 2nd and 3rd day of the promotion.

Thoughts : We do thank the Sunway Pyramid management for inviting us to be part of their Gaya Raya event. It’s really hard to say if we created enough impact at Sunway (I mean impact with creating Deaf Awareness). We’re waiting for some feedback from the management after the Raya holidays.

Sep 16, 2008 - Preparing for the promotion at Sunway

15

September

Seen here is Agnes giving some guidance and instructions to Carol Lau, Deaf Supervisor, in preparation for the Deaf Art promotion this weekend (Fri 19th - Sun 21st 2008 at Sunway Pyramid). Carol has been able to successfully mobilise Deaf workers for our promotions. Many Deaf helpers who are in need of part job work through the Deaf promotions are looking up to Carol for mentoring and coaching.

Carol is patient, a good leader and is attentive to the needs of her team of Deaf helpers. She is also very firm and assertive in nurturing positive attitude and positive thinking among the Deaf helpers. She is also keen to see the Deaf helpers in her team set good examples in their attitude towards work, being service oriented and displaying good teamwork.

September

Meet Kong Guat Lay. Guat Lay is Deaf and blind. Seen here with her husband Tan Buey Choon who is also Deaf.

Guat Lay lost her sight after the birth of her second child. When communicating with Guat Lay, one has to do so by placing hands underneath her palm to communicate in sign.

This weekend Fri 19th - Sun 21st September, Guat Lay will be with the Mission at The Sunway Pyramid, LG1, Main Concourse (sphinx) where we will be promoting her paper craft.

She makes beautiful paper craft jewellery boxes. Simply amazing!

So, folks, do come and buy of this lovely paper craft this forthcoming weekend when we will be at Sunway Pyramid (Fri 19th - Sun 21st Sept @ 10.00am - 10.00pm), Main Concourse, LG1 (Old Wing - Sphinx).
