Works by hearing-impaired artists

By TAN KARR WEI

ABOUT eight months ago, Anuar Shahren Shariffin, 32, started working as a three-dimensional interior designer to translate two-dimensional sketches into three-dimensional designs.

Even though there was a trainer to teach him the new software, Anuar had to put in a lot of extra effort because he is hearing-impaired.

“It took me about six months to establish myself. I would look at online guides to help me learn the software, so I actually had two computers in front of me while I worked,” Anuar said.

Festive greetings: Visitors will be able to buy greeting cards like this Hari Raya card designed by Parameswaran Gunaselan.

Anuar is one of the artists who are displaying their art works during the Deaf Art Expose 2008 organised by the RC Deaf Missions.

RC Deaf Missions director Agnes Isobel Peter said that not all hearing-impaired persons were as fortunate as Anuar.

“Even though they are as capable as people who can hear, many employers still have second thoughts about hiring them for fear that they may have communication problems,” said Agnes.

According to Anuar, he has not encountered problems at his work place so far.

“I even have discussions with my colleagues. Sometimes they communicate through visual gestures but most of the time, they would write what they want to say on a piece of paper,” he said.

Watercolour piece painted by Anuar.

The mission was set up by Agnes and her brother Mario Richard Peter in 2006 to provide career and business opportunities for the hearing-impaired and to create community awareness of their capabilities among other objectives.

Mario said they were also hoping to nurture mentors, so that the younger ones would be able to get guidance from the older ones, as many of them lacked confidence.

Besides providing a platform for deaf artists to showcase their art or earn extra income by supervising and running the project, the Deaf Art Expose is an avenue to reach out to the community.

“We hope that the public will see for themselves what the hearing-impaired are capable of doing. This would also be the time for the public to interact with the hearing-impaired community,” Peter said.

Marketing personnel: Gilbert (second from right) has been actively working with the mission to sell art works by the hearing-impaired artists.

Another artist who is displaying his work, is Lim Anuar, an art director at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology.

Lim will also be holding painting demonstrations during the event.

“It would be nice if people bought my paintings but even if they did not, it’s okay. I’m proud that the public can see our works and hope that they will accept our skills and be amazed by it,” said Lim.

Other activities lined up for the event include a mime performance, a drama performance by the hearing-impaired, sign language lessons and the sale of handicraft and greeting cards.

Sales assistant Phoebe Ting, 26, is selling her handmade earrings.

Pretty accessories: Earrings made by Ting are among the items on sale.

She works full-time at a gift shop in Suria KLCC and also makes photo frames from recycled materials.

The mission also has an art team, headed by Peter Lau, that designs festive greeting cards. Lau said he would supervise the team of four designers and they would brainstorm for ideas, usually at night because most of them had full-time jobs.

Solomon Lim and Parameswaran Gunaselan are desktop publishing (DTP) operators while Venugopal Krishna Kumar is a graphic designer. Rachel Lam is the other designer in the team.

The sales and marketing team also comprises the hearing-impaired, headed by Carol Lau.

Carol and Jeffrey Gilbert, 43, have been diligently helping the mission market the works created by the artists.

The Deaf Art Expose is on from 10am to 8pm daily from Friday until Sunday (1 Aug - 3 Aug), at Amcorp Mall in Petaling Jaya. For more information, visit www.rcdeafmissionsmalaysia.com.

Creating awareness of the deaf

By ROUWEN LIN

THE inaugural Deaf Art Expose 2008, with its theme Art Journey in the Deaf World, aims to create awareness among the public on the capabilities of the deaf. It also aims to provide about 30 deaf people with part-time employment and nurture leadership qualities.

All in a row: (From left) Agnes, Teng, Mario, Tuan Haji Azlan Baquee, Exec Dir of Melwangi Sdn Bhd representing AMCORP, and PS Dhillon, Manager, Eden Cafe, and representing Eden Incorporated at the launch of the Deaf Expose 2008 at Amcorp Mall.

The expose was organised by RC Deaf Missions, an organisation founded by siblings Agnes and Mario Peter.

“We are trying to make a difference in the livelihood of deaf people and be a successful service industry with Deaf Impact. Our mission is manifesting in several ways, one of which is this expose, said Agnes.

RC Mission’s long-term goals include providing jobs for the deaf, producing a good pool of interpreters, including deaf interpreters, and formulating a sign language course curriculum.

Mario and I would like to empower deaf people to co-manage some of our businesses, added Agnes.

Deputy Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Teng Boon Soon commented in his opening address at the expose launch that the community had to focus on the strengths and capabilities of the deaf.

The deaf could contribute to the nation, but they had to be given the opportunities and means to be able to do so, said Teng.

It is not enough to merely provide employment for the deaf.

We need to question whether the workplace or community as a whole offers a conducive environment for this integration, Teng he added.

Although the main feature of the expose is the artwork exhibition by deaf artists, there was an arts and crafts sale running throughout the duration of the event.

But artwork aside, a diversity of deaf talents such as jing ying wushu, mimes, dragon dances and lion dances was also showcased.

Short video presentations ran at noon daily for those interested in some background of the deaf artists and other people behind the scenes of RC Deaf Missions.

The public will also be given the opportunity to learn sign language.

Visit www.rcdeafmissionsmalaysia.com for details on the association and career opportunities.

Anne Laura Raymond (Loula) performing a mime on the Life of an Artist.
She also performed an additional mime called Mona Lisa which was hilarious and enriching. Loula also conducted interactive short sessions with the public teaching them at least the manual alphabets in sign language and how to be creative with A-Z story telling.
